Q: What do we do? A: Through a highly qualified full time and volunteer staff, we serve the needs of victims and witnesses of crime via a myriad of services under five major components: - Domestic Violence - Child Abuse - Survivors of Homicide Victims - General Advocacy - Aggravated Assault Q: Are we attorneys? A: No. We are a full-time and volunteer staff committed to assisting victims/witnesses. Q: What are my rights as a victim/witness? A: GEORGIA VICTIMS' BILL OF RIGHTS Sect 17-17 ACOG AS A VICTIM OF CRIME YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO: - designate an immediate relative to act on your behalf - receive prompt telephone notification of the release of the accused - compensation for certain expenses elated to your victimization - access to available community based victim service programs - information regarding the steps in the criminal case - notification prior to any hearing involving the release of the accused - express your opinion on the pending release of the accused - confidentiality involving the release of your personal information - express your opinions regarding the disposition of the case Q: What are municipal court procedures? What does this court do? A: Municipal court handles all violations of municipal ordinances, also probable cause and preliminary hearings are handled here. Any felony trial may be sent on to superior court if a jury trial is requested. Q: What types of services do you provide?/how can you help me as a witness? A: AtlantaVA provides the following services to help victims have smoother experiences: - information about the status of court case(s); - notice of court proceedings, including charges; - information about criminal justice proceedings; - companion during court appearances and to provide emotional support; - referral to social services agencies; - employer intervention to explain time missing from work due to court appearances; - assistance if being intimidated or harassed about serving as a court witness; - recovery of stolen property being held as evidence. Q: What is a bond order? A: A bond order is an order from the court that sets bond in a certain amount. Q: What is a protective order? A: A protective order is an order from the court that tells defendants that they may not have violent contact (in some cases any contact) with witnesses/victims.
